India Natural Rubber output projected 912,200 tons in 2012-13: Rubber Board

Consumption of NR in 2012-13 is provisionally estimated at 971,980 tons, an increase of 0.8% as compared to 1.8% during 2011-12. NR consumption in tyre sector was flat with a negligible growth of 0.01% whereas in non-tyre sector, NR consumption increased by 2.3%.

GUWAHATI (Commodity Online): India’s natural rubber (NR) production for the year 2012-13 is provisionally estimated at 912,200 tons, with a slight increase of 0.9% when compared to the 4.8% increase in 2011-12, said Sheela Thomas, Chairman, Rubber Board while delivering her presidential address in the 171st meeting of the Rubber Board held at Guwahati on Friday.

During last fiscal, monthly NR production was lower in April and May 2012 and January to March 2013 owing to adverse weather conditions.

Consumption of NR in 2012-13 is provisionally estimated at 971,980 tons, an increase of 0.8% as compared to 1.8% during 2011-12. NR consumption in tyre sector was flat with a negligible growth of 0.01% whereas in non-tyre sector, NR consumption increased by 2.3%.

Monthly NR consumption remained lower than that of previous year from November 2012. Import and export of NR amounted to 216,642 tons and 30,353 tons respectively during 2012-13. Export of branded “Indian NR” amounted to 17,813 tons, 59% of the total during 2012-13.

India’s production and consumption of NR in 2013-14 are projected at 960,000 tons and 1020,000 tons respectively with a deficit of 60,000 tons.

However, there will not be any shortage of NR in the domestic market in 2013-14, as the estimated opening stock of NR in April 2013 is 266,000 tons and the rubber consuming industry has entitlement to import more than 100,000 tons of NR through duty free channels, she informed.

The world production and consumption of NR in 2012 according to the International Rubber Study Group (IRSG) is 11.38 and 10.92 million tons respectively with a surplus of 459,000 tons. They forecast world production and consumption of NR in 2013 at 11.77 and 11.59 million tons respectively with a surplus of 179,000 tons.

World production of NR grew only by 3.2% in 2012 as compared to the growth of 5.8% in 2011. World stock of NR increased from 1.23 million tons in May 2012 to 1.88 million tons in December 2012.

But SR consumption which increased by 6.4% in 2011 remained flat in 2012. World production of tyres grew only by 0.7% in 2012 as compared to 3.8% in 2011.

IRSG estimates that world NR production and consumption in 2014 would be 12.45 and 12.30 million tons with a surplus of 150,000 tons, said Sheela Thomas.
