NEW DELHI – Prices of mill-quality wheat rose today in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, and those of maize were also up in Davanagere, Karnataka, as arrivals of the grain declined, traders said.
Prices of mill-quality WHEAT rose today in Indore, said Lavish Shah, a local trader. Wheat was sold at 2,200-2,260 rupees per 100 kg, up 20 rupees from Tuesday, Shah said. Arrivals of the grain were pegged steady at 10,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).
In Kota, Rajasthan, wheat was sold at 1,950-2,000 rupees per 100 kg, unchanged from Tuesday, said Aniket Mehta, a local trader. Arrivals of the crop were pegged at 100,000 bags, down 25,000 bags from the previous day of trade, Mehta said.
As of Monday, the Centre procured 10,727 tn of wheat for the rabi marketing season 2023-24 compared with nil last year, the Department of Food and Public Distribution said in a release on Tuesday.
Over 3.1 mln farmers have registered for public procurement operations of wheat in the current year as against 1.8 mln farmers that participated last year. In the 2023-24 rabi marketing season, 34.2 mln tn of wheat is expected to be procured, as against 18.8 mln tn procured last year, the release said.
The government has estimated the cereal’s output at 112.2 mln tn, 4.2% above the previous year’s output at 107.7 mln tn. At 112.2 mln tn, wheat output in the country would reach a record high level. However, the unusual behaviour of weather, first abnormal heat in some regions and then unseasonal rains in some others, have created uncertainty about the wheat output this season.
MAIZE was sold at 1,900-2,150 rupees per 100 kg, up 50 rupees from Tuesday in Davanagere, Karnataka, due to a decline in arrivals, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Arrivals were pegged at 700 bags (1 bag = 65 kg), down 300 bags from Tuesday.
In Purnea, Bihar, wheat was sold at 2,400-2,450 rupees per 100 kg, steady from Tuesday, said Kanhaiya Rastogi, a local trader. Arrivals were pegged at 6,000 bags, down 125 bags from previous trading day.
