TAIPEI: Taiwan stocks dropped 0.2 percent on Friday, led by a middling showing from the island’s key banking and electronics sectors.
As of 0149 GMT, the main TAIEX index was down 19.30 points to 9,600, after closing down 0.5 percent on Thursday.
The electronics subindex was 0.26 percent lower. Leading the decline were smartphone chip-design firm MediaTek Inc and struggling PC maker Acer Inc, which fell 1.48 and 1.64 percent, respectively.
The banking subindex fell 0.64 percent, led by Fubon Financial Holding Co Ltd’s 1.57 percent decline.
On Thursday, the island’s central bank left rates unchanged for the 15th consecutive quarter, citing mild inflation and decent overseas demand for the island’s tech goods.
The Taiwan dollar was up T$ 0.150 to stand at T$ 31.252 to the US dollar.
