HONG KONG: Shares in Shanghai and Hong Kong ended the morning session lower again Tuesday as data indicating Chinese manufacturing activity had contracted in August compounded concerns about the country’s slowing economy.
The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index dropped 1.06 percent, or 33.96 points, to 3,172.03 by lunch. However, it recovered after plunging as much as 4.75 percent at one point.
The Shenzhen Composite Index, which tracks stocks on China’s second exchange, slid 2.85 percent, or 50.97 points, to 1,739.34.
And Hong Kong’s benchmark Hang Seng Index eased 0.47 percent, or 101.44 points, to 21,569.14.
