MUMBAI – Prices and arrivals of maize were up in key wholesale markets of Karnataka today due to firm demand from neighbouring states, market participants said. Prices of rice and wheat were flat today in key wholesale markets, traders said.
MAIZE prices were up by 50 rupees today in Davanagere, Karnataka, at 2,000-2,301 rupees per 100 kg, said Shiva Kumar, a local maize trader. Prices of the grain in the key market rose as crop arrivals in Tamil Nadu still have high moisture, which raised demand in Karnataka, he said. The acceptable moisture content in the grain is 14%. The trader expects the price to rise by 50 rupees next week.
Arrivals were up by 1,000 bags to 3,000 bags (1 bag = 60 kg) from the previous day, Kumar said. “Because of high prices and demand, farmers are bringing more stock (to the mandi),” he said.
Prices of Sona Masoori RICE were flat at 6,000 per 100 kg in Bhavanipuram, Vijayawada, Ravi Shankar, a local rice trader, said. On Tuesday, the government flagged off 100 mobile vans carrying subsidised rice under the Bharat rice scheme in New Delhi and another 8,000-9,000 vans will be available across the country to sell the subsidised rice, according to an official statement.
According to the consumer affairs department, the all India average wholesale price of rice today was 3,877.62 rupees per 100 kg, up 521.35 rupees from 3,356.27 rupees a year ago and 5.50 rupees higher from a month ago. The Bharat rice scheme was launched by the government to cool down high prices of the grain in domestic markets.
Prices of mill quality WHEAT in Kota, Rajasthan, were steady against the previous day at 2,325-2,350 rupees per 100 kg, said Aniket Mehta, a local trader. Arrivals, too, were steady in Kota at 2,000 bags (1 bag = 60 kg), from the previous day, Mehta said.
