DONGGUAN (China), Oct 28 (Bernama) — Dongguan, an important industrial city and manufacturing hub in China, is keen to import more commodities from Malaysia, especially palm oil and rubber.
“Malaysia has many commodity products which Dongguan needs. At the same time we also have electronic companies that are keen to explore the Malaysian market for its products,” said its Mayor Yuan Baocheng.
Hence, the city is keen to enhance collaboration and spur trade between Dongguan and Malaysia, he told a press conference in conjunction with the three-day 2015 Guangdong 21st Century Maritime Silk Road International Expo which would kick off on October 29.
Dongguan’s growth depends very much on its manufacturing sector and is well-known as a progressive city in seeking foreign direct investment.
This is the second time Dongguan, which borders the provincial capital of Guangzhou to the north, Huizhou to the northeast, Shenzhen to the south and the Pearl River to the west, is organising the Expo.
The expo, which attracted 42 countries including Thailand, India, Malaysia, Laos and Cambodia, is aimed at increasing economic and trade cooperation between Guangdong and countries along the maritime silk road.
Yuan said Malaysia remained the largest exhibitor with 270 companies participating this year with a majority of the exhibitors from the food and beverage sector.
Elaborating on efforts taken by the city to attract investors, he said last year the province launched the “Replacing-Workers-With-Machines” campaign to address rising labour cost and to boost efficiency.
