360-degree videos made their way into Facebook’s News Feed back in September, but it was only available for web and Android users. Now, iOS users can join in on the fun as well, thanks to a new Facebook update that is being rolled out today.
CEO and founder of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg announced this news from his official account. He posted, “We just started launching 360 video on mobile. 360 video is a completely new experience because you can move the camera around. This opens new ways of sharing experiences and makes you feel like you’re part of what you’re watching. It’s a step towards even more immersive experiences”
According to The Verge, A number of publishers and brands including GoPro, Vice, and The Disney Channel have already published 360-degree content, and Facebook says there are more videos on the way from the likes of BuzzFeed, Nickelodeon and ABC News. The social network is also launching a new microsite for the format, explaining how to upload the videos and best practices for shooting.
Unlike regular videos, 360-degree clips require specialized cameras that are able to capture a full view of the scene around them. You can change your view of the videos by holding your smartphone at a different angle or by dragging your finger (or cursor, if you’re in a browser) around the frame.
