Kerala Congress (M) leader Jose K. Mani, MP, who is on an indefinite fast demanding immediate Central government intervention to lift the sagging natural rubber price line, has called for imposing more tax on synthetic rubber.
In a statement here on Tuesday, Mr. Jose K. Mani said that synthetic rubber today attracted an import duty of just 10 per cent, against the 25 per cent by natural rubber. ‘‘It is only natural, that synthetic rubber should at least attract an import duty on par with that of natural rubber,’’ he said.
In addition, the government had imposed a two per cent cess on natural rubber while synthetic rubber went without any cess.
He said that synthetic rubber should be imposed an additional tax as it had a higher carbon emission than natural rubber.
