Global acetals leader Celanese Corp. is making a big move into the nylon resin market.
Dallas-based Celanese announced Jan. 21 that it would expand its portfolio to include nylon 6 and 6/6 using its own differentiated technology. Officials said that some nylon grades will be available immediately, while others will be available beginning in the third quarter.
Adding nylon will allow Celanese to add greater values for customers in the automotive, consumer goods and electrical/electronics markets, materials solutions president Scott Sutton said in the release.
Celanese technologies to be used in the nylon line include:
• Appearance technologies with MetaLX-brand metal-effect capabilities, lasermarkable abilities and pre-color compounding.
• Melt-impregnation technologies for structural applications to expand the firm’s Celstran-brand long-fiber thermoplastics and composites.
• Blend technologies that combine nylons with PCT, liquid crystal polymer (LCP) and polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) resins made by Celanese.
Celanese announced the nylon move on the same date that it released full-year financial results for 2015. For the year, the firm’s sales fell almost 14 percent to just under $ 5.7 billion as annual profit fell 51 percent to $ 304 million.
