Celanese Corp.’s move into nylon will consist of compounding nylon 6 and 6/6 with additional Celanese materials, but won’t include production or distribution of base nylon resins.
A spokesman for Dallas-based Celanese confirmed the strategy in a Jan. 26 phone interview. “We’ll source nylon from an outside producer,” he said.
Celanese already compounds nylon in some grades of its Celstran-brand long-fiber reinforced thermoplastic resins and in some conductive compounds that it acquired when it bought Cool Polymers Inc. in 2014.
New compounds that combine nylon with PCT, liquid crystal polymer (LCP) and polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) resins made by Celanese are expected to be available beginning in the third quarter. The firm announced the nylon platform on Jan. 21.
Celanese ranks as the world’s largest acetals maker. The firm employs 7,500 worldwide and posted sales of around $ 5.7 billion in 2015.
