Macro Engineering and Technology installed a seven-layer cast extrusion lamination line at Raven Industries Inc., the Sioux Falls, SD-based maker of film and sheet — known for its headline-grabbing work on high-altitude balloons.
Macro Engineering, of Mississauga, Ontario, specializes in custom machinery.
“We took on the challenges this project presented to us along with the Raven development team,” said Macro CEO Jim Stobie.
Anthony Schmidt, Raven Industries’ vice president and general manager of the Engineered Films Division, said the line will allow the company to develop “some truly unique products.”
Schmidt said: “The advanced capabilities of this production line will accelerate our expansion into the industrial business segment, by offering a broad range of highly refined composite materials — with several being new to the industry.
The new seven-layer cast lamination line is capable of processing advanced barrier structures designed to prevent the migration of radon, methane, odors and hazardous volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Unique features include two individual extrusion dies to process low- and high-viscosity resin types. The separate dies enable the production of custom-engineered fabric composites, scrim-reinforced membranes and integrated release liners.
The new line also has advanced wide-width capabilities of up to 150 inches, and ranging in thickness from 4 mil to 80 mil.
