Washington — The premier U.S plastics industry trade group is getting a new name, and a new look, by the end of 2016, the organization announced May 26.
Officially known for eight decades as the Society of the Plastics Industry Inc., the group currently uses “SPI: The Plastics Industry Trade Association” in its marketing efforts. In plastics circles, the group is commonly referred to as SPI.
As of next year, SPI will officially become the Plastics Industry Association.
The change was announced to members via email after months of discussion and an April vote at the board of directors meeting in Santa Ana Pueblo, N.M. The name change will also come with a new logo and entirely revamped website.
The goal, according to the email from SPI President and CEO Bill Carteaux, is to have a name for the trade group that “fits our expanded vision and makes obvious who we are and what we do.”
It is expected to put an end to confusion with other groups in the plastics industry —- such as SPE, the Society of Plastics Engineers — or groups outside the industry is another goal, according to the group.
“It’s a simpler name that really communicates who we are,” said SPI Vice President of Communications Mia Freis Quinn. “What we do remains the same.”
