James J. Fagan Sr., who founded two pioneering screw and barrel companies in New Castle, Pa., died on July 29. He was 81.
He married Eileen Pellegrino Fagan 55 years ago.
In 1966, Fagan left his job at National Rubber and Machinery Co. (NRM), the extruder and equipment manufacturer in Akron, Ohio, and co-founded Feedscrews Inc. — believed to be New Castle’s first screw and barrel company. That company was later sold to Union Electric Steel Co. and renamed New Castle Industries Inc.
Then in 1986, he and his wife founded Precision Feedscrews Inc., also in New Castle. That company remains family owned and run today, and is celebrating its 30th anniversary.
Screw designer Tim Womer said he enjoyed working at New Castle Industries with Fagan, who had reached iconic status in the industry.
“He was a great mentor and a great Christian guy. And he was really funny,” Womer said.
Fagan graduated from high school in Akron, and graduated from the school of management at Wittenburg University and the University Pittsburgh’s School of Management.
He served in the Korean War.
Fagan was active in the community, serving on the boards of the City Rescue Mission and People’s Bank of Western Pa./First Commonwealth bank.
He was an avid singer and guitar player. He loved to play basketball and racquetball. Womer said Fagan was nationally ranked in racquetball for his age group.
Memorial contributions can be made in Fagan’s name to the City Rescue Mission in New Castle.
