PARIS: French soft wheat exports reached 1.17 million in September, slowing from 1.39 million in the previous month but still running ahead of last season’s pace due to demand within the EU, customs data showed on Wednesday.
Cumulative soft wheat exports since the start of the 2017/18 season in July were 3.7 million tonnes, up 36 percent from a year earlier, the data showed.
Soft wheat shipments to other European Union countries totalled 674,138 tonnes in September, taking the volume so far this season to 1.98 million tonnes, up 66 percent from a year earlier.
Soft wheat exports outside the EU came to 500,599 tonnes during September, down sharply from 774,517 in August. The volume so far in 2017/18 had reached 1.74 million tonnes, up 13 percent from a year earlier.
Algeria remained the leading destination for French soft wheat in August, with 298,595 tonnes shipped.
A slowdown in agricultural and food exports in September contributed to a widening of France’s overall trade deficit, the custom’s office said in an earlier statement.
