PARIS: France exported 792,000 tonnes of soft wheat outside the European Union in December, the largest monthly volume so far in the 2017/18 marketing year, customs data showed on Wednesday.
The increased volume was supported by an acceleration in shipments to Morocco, with just over 179,000 tonnes exported, and 52,000 tonnes sent to Saudi Arabia in the first such shipment this season, the data showed.
Algeria remained the leading destination for French wheat but the 382,000 tonnes shipped were down sharply from 480,000 tonnes in November.
The December volume took French soft wheat exports outside the EU at the midpoint of the July-June season to 3.55 million tonnes, up 47 percent from a year earlier when shipments were curbed by a poor French crop.
Exports beyond the EU were still lagging shipments within the bloc. Intra-EU soft wheat shipments had reached 3.96 million tonnes by the end of December, up 66 percent from a year earlier, the data showed.
