NEW YORK: The Toronto Stock Exchange’s S&P/TSX fell 376.04 points, or 2.46 percent, to 14,909.13.
Biggest one-day percentage drop for TSX since September 2015. Leading the index were Capital Power Corp, up 2.5 percent, Fortis Inc, up 2.5 percent, and Algonquin Power & Utilities Corp, higher by 1.8 percent.
Lagging shares were First Quantum Minerals Ltd, down 9.1 percent, Bombardier Inc, down 8.6 percent, and New Gold Inc, lower by 8.2 percent.
On the TSX 33 issues rose and 212 fell as a 0.2-to-1 ratio favored decliners.
There were 2 new highs and 37 new lows, with total volume of 289.8 million shares.
The most heavily traded shares by volume were Aurora Cannabis Inc, Bombardier Inc and Aphria Inc.
The TSX’s energy group fell 6.04 points, or 3.52 percent, while the financials sector slipped 7.69 points, or 2.65 percent.
West Texas Intermediate crude futures fell 0.24 percent, or $0.16, to $66.27 a barrel. Brent crude fell 1.22 percent, or $0.93, to $75.51.
The TSX is off 8 percent for the year.
