The Ministry of Plantation Industry points out that there is a high demand for natural rubber both at the local and international markets. Thee government has already taken measures to spread rubber plantation in many parts of the island.
In addition to the traditional rubber growing districts the plantation has been expanded in Moneragala, Ampara, Hambantota, Mullativu, Vavuniya and Kilinochchi districts.
Secretary to the Ministry Mrs. Sudarma Karunaratne says 17 thousand hectares of rubber plantation have been started in Moneragala and Ampara districts. Measures have also been taken encourage cultivators in Mullativu and Kilinochchi districts. License have been issued to farmers in Vavuniya to grow 600 acres with rubber. He further said that the price rubber will increase in future and the cultivators will be able to have better income.
