Avon Rubber has been awarded a sole-source contract by the US Department of Defense (DOD) to develop a modified version of its M53 face mask to provide respiratory protection to a wide range of operators on the DOD’s fleet of fixed-wing aircraft.
The contract award for the MM53 type 2, as it will be known, is $4.3m. This initial two- year preproduction contract covers the development, testing and user trials of the new mask system and the provision of logistical support. There is potential for follow on production contract awards of up to £47.7m.
Commenting on the deal, Peter Slabbert, Avon’s chief executive said: “This contract reaffirms Avon Protection’s position as the respiratory protection equipment provider of choice for the US Department of Defense.
