KOTTAYAM (Rubber Country): The statistical data collection by the Rubber Board among the rubber tappers in the state has been extended up to 31 August 2013. Rubber tappers who have not yet given the details may contact their nearest Rubber Board offices with their identity cards. The program was scheduled to complete by 31 July 2013. However, owing to intermittent rain, the collection of the data could not be completed within the stipulated time.
About four lakh hectare rubber area in the State is under tapping. There is a growing concern in the sector regarding shortage of rubber tapping labourers. Statistical data is needed to analyze the situation. Dignity of labour, better working conditions and wages are to be ensured in this sector to retain existing labour force and to attract new ones in this field. It is with this aim Rubber Board has started this venture.
