Micheldever Tyre Services (MTS), one of the UK’s largest tyre distributors, is making significant strides towards its sustainability goals with the installation of cutting-edge solar panels at its Halifax (Elland) depot.
This initiative is expected to save the company up to £7.5 million over the next 25 years while also substantially reducing its carbon footprint.
The newly installed solar panels cover 1,270 square meters and comprise 635 individual modules. These panels are projected to supply a third of the depot’s electrical needs, significantly reducing reliance on non-renewable energy sources. This installation alone will decrease CO2 emissions by over 50,000 kg annually, aligning with MTS’s commitment to cut its carbon footprint by 50% by 2025 and achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.
Dave Haddock, Logistics Director at MTS, highlighted the dual benefits of this project: “We are always looking at ways to improve our carbon footprint and align with our environmental goals. The solar panels will reduce our CO2 emissions significantly and provide us with valuable insights on how we can implement similar improvements at other depots nationwide. Plus, with an estimated £7.5 million in savings over the next 25 years, the decision to go solar was a ‘no brainer’.”
The Halifax depot was chosen as a pilot site following a comprehensive review of MTS depots across the UK. The project received the necessary permissions from the landlord and was approved by the electricity grid operator (DNO). Encouraged by the success of this initial installation, MTS plans to extend the use of solar panels to other depots across the country by 2025, pending further approvals.
This solar initiative is a key component of MTS’s broader sustainability strategy, demonstrating that economic efficiency and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand. By integrating renewable energy sources and enhancing operational efficiency, MTS is reinforcing its commitment to sustainable business practices.
