Rubber cultivation of Karbi Anglong may soon be recognized as second highest producer in India.
With one hundred thousand hector of plantation and ever increasing trend soon rubber will surpass cultivation of other commercial cultivation like tea and coffee in this district.
Recently the Central Rubber board has planned to expand rubber plantation in Assam by 2 lakh hectors out of which one lakh hector has been earmarked in this district.
The decision has been taken in view of the favourable soil and weather condition.
Low investment and high yielding nature of rubber plantation and accessibility to large stretch of land for locals (6th scheduled tribes) is one of the key factors. Seeing the cost-effective feasibility of rubber in this district Union Home Ministry has instructed Assam Government to deploy Central Industrial Security Force to protect vast extension of rubber plantation in Karbi Anglong.
Delegation of rubber growers of this district recently meet Joint Secretary of Union Home Ministry in charge of northeast, Sambhu Singhat at New Delhi to discuss various aspects of this growing industry who informed the delegation about Central government’s decision for deployment of CISF in Karbi Anglong to check plundering of rubber plantation.
