KUALA LUMPUR, April 8 (Bernama) — The government may set the price floor for rubber to protect smallholders from the commodity price fluctuation, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.
Plantation Industries and Commodities Minister Datuk Seri Douglas Uggah said the idea was deliberated in a laboratory conducted in March to work out a social safety net mechanism to help rubber smallholders.
“Whether the price floor will be implemented depends on the outcome of lab deliberation. We will also consider other proposals churned out by the lab,” he said in a written reply to a question from Datuk Nawawi Ahmad (BN-Langkawi).
Uggah said the government was also studying complementary activities to enable rubber smallholders to generate additional income to ease their burden due to falling rubber price. — BERNAMA
