SURAT: With an intention to meet the future requirements of water of Surat city, Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has planned to construct a rubber barrage between Magdalla to Cause way cum weir. The survey report submitted after four years of allotment of work has put the estimated cost of this barrage at Rs 147 crore.
SMC has been oscillating between the two options of either to construct a rubber barrage to store water or to set up direct pipelines from Kakarapar weir to the city. At last in 2010 it decided to get survey conducted with phesibility and cost .
The survey report for construction of barrage 2 km up stream of Magdalla and 10 km downstream of weir has put the estimated cost of the barrage at Rs147 crore . Construction of barrage has multipurpose objectives of storing additional water for city, creating recreation centers on both sides of barrage and maintain a water body to improve the environment.
The company named Wapcos Limited that prepared the survey has submitted the report to SMC and now the rulers would take a final call if to go ahead with construction of barrage for permanent storage of about 16 Million Cubic Meters (MCM) , which would be about 16 days of water supply to the city.
“We would take a call on once the proposal is presented to us with full survey report.” Said a member of standing committee.
