[I] India Stocks Review: Trade in thin range ahead of Fed meeting minutes

MUMBAI – Benchmark indices traded in a narrow range today as investors are likely to have exercised caution ahead of the release of minutes of the US Federal Reserve’s last policy meeting. The minutes will help investors understand the Fed’s view on inflation and economy, and consequently the quantum of rate hike in December.
In the past couple of weeks, several officials of the US central bank have given divergent views on future policy tightening. Data from the US too have been conflicting. While inflation showed signs of cooling off, the labour market remained tight. The divided views and data points have led to uncertainty over whether the Fed will hike its key interest rate by 50 basis points or 75 bps at its next meeting.
The Nifty 50 ended 0.1% higher at 18267.25 points and the Sensex closed the session 0.2% higher at 61510.58 points. The benchmark Nifty 50 traded in a range of less than 100 points today, hitting a high of 18325.4 points and a low of 18246 points intraday.
The trade in futures and options segment was also in focus today ahead of the expiry of monthly derivatives contracts on Thursday.
The rollover of positions by foreign institutional investors were mostly on long side, while domestic institutional investors have rolled over positions on short side, said Viraj Vyas, technical and derivatives analyst-institutional equities at Ashika Group. The data indicates that the market is unlikely to move significantly in either of the directions in the near term.
Among sectors, banks and media companies gained the most, while information technology and metal companies were the worst hit today. The Nifty PSU Bank index rose for the seventh consecutive session.
Among Nifty 50 stocks, Apollo Hospitals Enterprise rose 3% and was the top gainer. However, Adani Enterprises lost the most, a day after the company said its board will consider raising funds via issue of equity or other securities.
Shares of Inox Green Energy Services made a weak debut on the bourses today as they got listed at a discount of 7.7% to the issue price on the National Stock Exchange. The stock ended over 9% lower at 59.10 rupees.
* Among Nifty 50 stocks, 24 rose, 25 fell and 1 was unchanged
