NEW DELHI – Prices of mill-quality wheat rose in the benchmark markets of Rajasthan’s Kota and Madhya Pradesh’s Indore, while those of maize remained steady in Bihar’s Purnea, market participants said.
Prices of mill-quality WHEAT rose today in Kota due to a rise in demand for the staple grain, said Aniket Mehta, a local trader. Wheat was sold at 2,250 rupees per 100 kg, up 50 rupees from Tuesday, Mehta said. Arrivals of wheat, however, were pegged at 18,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), up 4,000 bags from the previous trading day.
In Indore, wheat was sold at 2,050-2,100 rupees per 100 kg, up 50 rupees from Monday, said Jitendra Panwar, a local trader. Arrivals were pegged at 20,000 bags, down 10,000 bags from Monday. Markets were shut on Tuesday on account of ‘Amavasya’, traders said.
Harvesting of wheat has already begun in Madhya Pradesh and procurement of the crop will begin from Saturday. Wheat procurement in Punjab and Haryana will start from Apr 1.
India’s wheat production in 2022-23 (Jul-Jun) is seen at 112.2 mln tn, against 107.7 mln tn in 2021-22, according to the second advance estimate released by the farm ministry in February.
MAIZE was sold at 2,500 rupees per 100 kg in Purnea, steady from Tuesday, said Kanhaiya Rastogi, a local trader. Arrivals of the crop were pegged at 150 bags (1 bag = 65 kg), up 50 bags from Tuesday, Rastogi said.
Prices of maize were unavailable in Davanagere in Karnataka as markets were shut on account of a local festival, traders said. The market will reopen on Friday.
Prices of common rice at Karanjia in Odisha and fine rice at Gulbarga in Karnataka were unavailable.
