NEW DELHI – Prices of maize fell in key markets of Purnea in Bihar as arrivals of the grain increased, and those of mill-quality wheat fell in Kota, Rajasthan, due to sluggish demand, traders said.
MAIZE was sold at 2,400-2,450 rupees per 100 kg in Purnea, Bihar, down 50 rupees from Monday because of an increase in arrivals, said Kanhaiya Rastogi, a local trader. Arrivals were pegged at 6,125 bags (1 bag = 65 kg), compared with 900 bags on Monday, Rastogi said.
At Davanagere in Karnataka, maize prices were steady at 1,900-2,100 rupees per 100 kg, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Arrivals of the grain were pegged steady at 1,000 bags.
Prices of mill-quality WHEAT fell in Kota on tepid demand, said Aniket Mehta, a local trader. Wheat was sold at 1,950-2,000 rupees per 100 kg in Kota, down 50 rupees from Monday.
Arrivals of the crop were pegged steady at 125,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), Mehta said.
In Indore, Madhya Pradesh, however, wheat prices remained steady from Monday at 2,200-2,240 rupees per 100 kg, said Lavish Shah, a local trader. Arrivals were also pegged steady at 10,000 bags.
The government has estimated the cereal’s output at 112.2 mln tn, 4.2% above the previous year’s output at 107.7 mln tn. At 112.2 mln tn, wheat output in the country would reach a record high level. However, the unusual behaviour of weather, first abnormal heat in some regions and then unseasonal rains in some others, has created uncertainty about the wheat output this season.
The following table details the prices in rupees per 100 kg, in major key markets, along with the change in their value:
