MUMBAI – Benchmark indices trumped predictions of a downturn by closing higher today. Both the Nifty 50 and Sensex closed 0.2% higher at 18601.50 points and 62724.71 points, respectively. While Nifty 50 crossed the 18600 mark, the Sensex closed after gaining nearly 100 points.
Indices opened today in the green, tracking positive cues from the Wall Street. But analysts had expected the domestic indices to turn red as the session progressed due to the correction the indices had witnessed over the last two sessions. However, indices continued to be in the green except for a brief while and ended with gains.
Midcap and smallcap indices on the National Stock Exchange ended in the green today.
“Cautious optimism was the preferred theme as benchmark Nifty fluctuated in a narrow range with investors gearing up for this week’s key macroeconomic events like Consumer Price Index and Index of Industrial Production data, US Federal Open Market Committee meeting and external commercial borrowing rate decision,” said Prashanth Tapse, senior vice-president at Mehta Equities in a note.
Among the sectoral indices, the rise was led by Nifty IT index which ended 1.5% higher. Gains in the sector came after the index saw a correction in the past week. Major Nifty 50 constituents from the sector, except Wipro, ended in the green.
Shares of Bharat Petroleum Corp were the top gainers on the Nifty 50, ending 3.4% higher, followed by HCL Technologies and Infosys shares, both ended 2.7% and 2.1% higher respectively.
Among non-Nifty 50 companies, shares of Avantel ended 10% higher today on the BSE after hitting a fresh all-time high of 663 rupees, after the company said it has signed a contract with the Ministry of Defence.
Shares of Maharashtra Seamless ended up 1.6% after hitting an all-time high of 498 rupees as the company prepaid 2.34 bln rupees worth of an outstanding long-term loan.
Shares of Delhivery ended up 9.4% today after hitting a fresh six-month high of 399.90 rupees after two large deals, involving a total of 3.05 mln shares, on the National Stock Exchange.
Shares of Zomato ended 0.5% higher today, extending their gains for the seventh straight session, after hitting a fresh 13-month high of 80.30 rupees.
“Domestic equities started the week on an optimistic note, supported by encouraging global cues. Even positive commentary from CEA with regards to India’s GDP growth, boosted sentiments. However, investors seemed cautious ahead of eventful week with many economic data points set to be released this week,” said Siddhartha Khemka, head of retail research at Motilal Oswal Financial Services in a note.
Banking and financial services stocks suffered a setback with the Nifty Bank emerging as the top loser among sectoral indices, ending 0.1% lower, while other sectoral indices ended in the green or flat.
Among Nifty 50 stocks, Power Grid Corp fell the most, ending 1.3% lower. It was followed by shares of Larsen & Toubro and Cipla, which ended 1% down.
