A new 137,000-square-foot facility will be ready in June for Nypro to provide room for expansion as well as to consolidate its Mebane, N.C., operations, according to General Manager Richard Champigny Jr.
“It is full steam ahead — we’re all on track and we will be in there in June,” Champigny said in a March 29 call.
Plans for the expansion surfaced in July, when the Mebane City Council approved a $ 314,250 incentive package. However, the company only recently confirmed that the project was moving ahead.
Champigny said Nypro will lease the building from Samet Corp. It will be fitted with $ 8 million in machinery including injection molding presses.
The new building will provide additional warehousing space. It allows Nypro’s local operation to remain in the same industrial center, which Champigny said offers geographical advantages. The company had explored other options in the region, he said.
He said Nypro’s Mebane facilities do injection molding and contract manufacturing for health care and packaging customers.
The company currently occupies 193,000 square feet of space, including a smaller 40,000-square-foot building that is coming off lease. Champigny said the smaller building will not be retained, but that having a new facility will provide room for growth. He expects Nypro will hire about 75 employees in the next two years. It has 270 now.
Nypro, a division of Jabil Circuit Inc., has been in Alamance County since 1987. It moved to Mebane in 2007. The company added 75,000 square feet of space in a 2014 expansion.
