The NTDA is joining forces with Prostate Cancer UK to raise awareness of the disease. In the UK, circa 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime. Exactly what causes this cancer is still unknown, but there are some things that may mean men are more likely to get it, these are called risk factors.
There are three main risk factors for getting prostate cancer, which are things men sadly can’t change. These are:
Getting older – it mainly affects men aged 50 or over;
Having a family history of prostate cancer;
Being black.
So prostate cancer mainly affects men over 50, and the risk increases as they get older. The most common age for men to be diagnosed with prostate cancer is between 65 and 69 years. If under 50, the risk of being diagnosed with prostate cancer is very low, but it is possible. Men over 50 who are worried about the risk of prostate cancer, might want to ask their GP about tests. Men over 45 who have a higher risk of prostate cancer because of a family history of it and black men, might want to talk to a GP too. Prostate cancer in males is the second most common cause of cancer death, but when diagnosed at its earliest stage, all (100%) of people with prostate cancer will survive their disease for five years or more, compared with around 1 in 2 (49%) people when the disease is diagnosed at the latest stage.
Like many manual-based technical trades, the UK tyre trade is still very much dominated by men and as recent skills shortages have shown, has an ageing workforce with many men falling into the aforementioned 50+ at risk category. Stefan Hay said: “In the week leading up to my meeting with the Prostate Cancer UK team, I coincidently found myself speaking to two colleagues from the trade, both of whom had been successfully treated for prostate cancer, and was then told that a family friend was also suffering. During my meeting with the charity, I was then shown case studies that also featured colleagues from our trade, two of whom I know personally. This really drew my attention to the magnitude of the issue and truly inspired me to work with the charity to raise awareness across the trade and promote the health and well-being of our people.”
The NTDA will be highlighting the work of Prostate Cancer UK in the 2022 UK Tyre & Automotive Directory, disseminating regular information to all of its member companies and inviting the charity to get involved with a number of its events such as the Tyre Industry Golf Day on 5th July and the Tyre Industry Conference and Annual Dinner on 6th October.
