MUMBAI – The fourteenth edition of the World Spice Congress will be held on Sep 15-17 at the CIDCO Exhibition and Convention Centre in Navi Mumbai, the Spices Board of India said at a conference today. The biennial world spice summit was held for the first time in 1990.
The fourteenth edition is being organised by the Spices Board and the commerce ministry. Major trader associations like the Federation of Indian Spice Stakeholders, Indian Pepper and Spice Trade Association, and Indian Spice Foodstuff Exporters Association are other event partners.
“The summit is (being) held on the sidelines of India’s G20 (Group of 20) presidency and would have 100 overseas delegates and 500 Indian delegates,” said Basisth Narayan Jha, marketing director of the Spices Board.
The summit will highlight the latest trends, trade information, and market intelligence. The event will also have technical sessions and reverse buyer-seller meets. Food safety, quality standards, reliability, and integrity in supply management will also be discussed.
On promoting exports, D. Sathiyan, secretary of the Spices Board, said, “India is the premier player in the global spice market. But post-COVID-19, rules have become stringent on chemical residue and Indian consignments have faced rejection or restrictions.”
Sathiyan said the recent restrictions on Indian spices had prompted the board to set up quality testing centres in line with the requirements of importing countries.
India exported spices worth 317.6 bln rupees in 2022-23 (Apr-Mar), against 303.2 bln rupees in 2021-22. Chilli, cumin, spice oil, and oleoresins have a major share in the spices export basket.
The major importers of Indian spices are China, the US, Bangladesh, and the United Arab Emirates.
With eight spices parks across the country, the spices segment comprises more than 9 mln farmers and 14 mln stakeholders. End
